Are you a proactive learner? The word, “proactive”, means that you can set your own learning tasks and that you have achieved at least some of the skills of an independent learner. You don’t have to wait for someone to tell you what to do next; instead you are able to plan and execute your learning plan. The proactive learner sets their own questions and recognizes that there are many ways to find out the answers to their questions.

If you are not using all the resources around you, then you are on your own and that can be hard when you are learning a new language and trying to gain mastery of the language.

It’s important that you use as many resources as possible to help you achieve mastery. Your teachers are your first valuable resource and your first step is to learn to ask questions.

Each Subject has its Own Language!

In order to gain the most marks, focus on the most important words in the statement or question.

The important words are known as keywords and keywords are broken up into two main groups: process words and content words.

Keywords

Keywords are the nouns in the assignment question or statement and process words tell you what to do.

Before you tackle your assignment, make sure to research each of these words and take notes so that you understand them fully. These words are important and you must focus on them to gain the most marks.

You cannot understand a subject if you do not understand the language of the subject. Create definitions and notes on the important words for each subject you are studying. Learn your definitions and keep a record of words that you discover as you study.

Each content word should be the start of your research into the topic and the way to produce meaningful research notes on specific points for the assignment.

Process Words

Process words explain what the reader should do. For example you may be asked to, “discuss”, “explain” or “compare”.

What do they mean? Record each word and it’s meaning by looking them up in the dictionary to get a clear concise explanation.

Contrast is an interesting process word. When this word pops up in your assignment you are meant to say how one thing is the SAME or DIFFERENT to the other. We are basically comparing things.

Your Preparation

If you are interested in winning the intellectual game of writing then make sure you prepare well. All games require preparation and an understanding of the rules.

READ THE QUESTION

Collecting Data

Next, prepare by researching your keywords. You are not going to create your introduction. You are not going to create the body of your essay or your conclusion.

You are going to prepare your notes! Become an expert on the topic. Read as many on-topic resources as you can find, dealing with your topic and record your most important observations, understandings and examples. This is how you prepare to write something meaningful.

Organizing Data

Now that you have created your notes make sure to label everything and organize these notes according to your important keywords or key ideas. This way you can locate information for your essay quickly.

Presentation

Creating your presentation is the next task and the assignment should give you a clear idea of how to present your answer. Let’s just assume you are writing an essay that will have three major parts: firstly the introduction and a possible thesis(what you think the answer should be), a body(containing the arguments – major essay points) and lastly the conclusion.

Quick Start Guide

1. Brainstorm – write your thoughts and questions.
2. Research and answer your own questions.
3. Create your thesis. Pick the major essay points you will use as your answer.
4. Create your essay structure and sequence of ideas.
5. Write your first draft.
6. Edit your draft. Correct poor paragraph sentences, making sure each paragraph deals with one topic idea. Poor spelling and punctuation make you look bad so make sure to ask someone else to proof read your work after you have completed the job.
7. Re-draft your essay until you think you have achieved the mark you want.

PARAGRAPHS

Why are paragraphs so easy to write? The answer is that a paragraph deals with ONE main idea. If you get sidetracked your writing ends up looking like a kitchen after dinner – a mess!

Firstly, start with your main idea sentence. Now that you have the introduction sentence or topic sentence discuss it. Introduce examples and proof. Explain the importance and relevance of this key idea and end with a concluding sentence that will logically lead on to the next point.

We should have started learning about how to conduct research at school and hopefully our teacher taught us about keywords and about organizing information using keywords.

Using keywords to organize information is the system that is used on the internet. We can start our search providing we have a relevant keyword that states our topic of interest and then we use a search engine like, Google, to help us locate relevant information about our keyword.

Doing research is so much easier than using the local library, when we use the biggest library on the planet - the internet! Just keep in mind that it is always hard to verify the truth in the resources you may find, but this has always been the case anyway. We do have to use a measure of trust and skepticism.

Not everyone uses information backed by research, but often case studies can supply a measure of proof that is sufficient for most investigations. If you are looking for a special guarantee as to whether SOMETHING will work for you - you're out of luck; it is impossible to say whether anything on earth will work for you. Even the new computer you just bought may malfunction and cost you more money - especially if you paid someone to install a wireless connection. Just understand that their are limits - especially when we are discussing the truth of the information we have found.

The next element is BIAS. If you are looking at who has the best understanding about a particular aspect, then in creeps the notion of bias. The news program or the documentary may tell you quite a lot about a topic, but what did it leave out and why?

Even though we have to put on our thinking caps as we create our research notes, research is an important skill and one that you will use all your life. There will always be a decision to make or a problem to solve.

Now when you hit a road block you should ask a question. Questions are very handy because they help you focus your energy on an issue. Now you can try to find the answer to your question.

A news media feeding frenzy erupted recently when a new diet study broke in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Almost all the reporters got it wrong, wrong WRONG! So did most of the gloating low carb forumites and bloggers. Come to think of it, almost everyone interpreted this study wrong. Some valuable insights came out of this study, but almost everyone missed them because they were too busy believing what the news said or defending their own cherished belief systems …

The new study, titled, “Weight Loss With a Low-Carbohydrate, Mediterranean, or Low-Fat Diet” was published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) in issue 359, number 3.

I quickly read the full text of the research paper the day it was published. Then, I shook my head in dismay as I scanned the news headlines.

I found it amusing that the media turned this into a three ring circus, putting a misleading “low carb versus high carb,” “Atkins vindicated” or “Diet wars” spin on the story. But that’s mainstream journalism for you, right? Gotta sell those papers!

In this report I'm going to present a CNN article on a therapy, known as "neurofeedback". My understanding is that it's about teaching the brain to be more effective by altering the brainwave patterns. The other way is by using drugs.

It looks like a scene from a 1950s science fiction flick: Patients with electrodes attached to their skulls sit deep in concentration, focusing their minds to control the beeps and squiggly lines produced by an electronic monitor.

Now these fantastic visions are unfolding with increasing frequency in real medical clinics around the country; people with epilepsy, attention deficit disorder and other forms of serious mental illness are treating these ailments by learning to control electrical patterns in their own brains. This therapy, known as neurofeedback, is emerging as the hottest new twist on biofeedback.

Though biofeedback was first developed by psychologists, its primary uses have been for illnesses below the neck. Standard biofeedback teaches you first to become conscious of normally unconscious functions such as pulse, digestion and body temperature, then teaches you to control them in response to sounds or other cues from monitoring devices. These techniques have allowed patients to lower their blood
pressure, banish their headaches and control their incontinence without using drugs.

Now new insights into the biology of mental illness have made it possible to treat them in a similar fashion.

Aerobics for the brain

In neurofeedback (also known as neurotherapy), therapists attach electrodes to patients' unshaved scalps. Through these electrodes, a device measures electrical impulses in the brain, amplifies them and then records them. These impulses are divided into different types of brain waves.

For example, in order to concentrate on a task, parts of the brain must produce more high-frequency beta waves. To relax, the brain must produce more low-frequency theta
waves.

Using a program similar to a computer game (only without a joystick), people learn to control the video display by achieving the mental state that produces increases in the desired brain wave. Some practitioners call it "aerobics for the brain."

In epilepsy, where once only medications and surgery could reduce seizures, neurofeedback is showing results. A German study published in the April 1999 journal Clinical Neurophysiology found that two-thirds of epilepsy patients could reduce their seizure rate by learning to control very low frequency brain waves in the cortex.

"In people with epilepsy, part of the brain has become unstable, and occasionally it triggers the rest of the brain into seizure," explains Siegfried Othmer, Ph.D., an Encino, California, physicist who trains biofeedback therapists. "Neurofeedback may help stabilize those circuits and reduce the probability of seizures."

New understanding

The use of neurofeedback for psychiatric problems depends on recent understanding about these diseases. In the 1960s, when biofeedback was developed as a therapy, schizophrenia and attention deficit were considered mainly the result of
emotional trauma or poor upbringing.

Consequently, biofeedback practitioners first focused on obviously physical problems. Now scientists understand better the electrical and chemical components of mental illness, creating opportunities for neurofeedback.

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) use neurofeedback games to reduce theta waves and increase beta waves, increasing their attentiveness. Joel Lubar, Ph.D., a psychologist at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, who
originated neurofeedback treatment for ADHD in the 1970s, says neurofeedback can produce some of the same brain wave changes as drugs used to treat the disorder.

In a 1998 study published in the December issue of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback, researchers in Ontario, Canada, taught ADHD patients biofeedback and learning strategies. They found a significant improvement in symptoms(such as impulsiveness and inattention) after 40 EEG biofeedback sessions, as well as a change in the ratio of beta to theta waves.

"Biofeedback can not only help a child use brain waves they don't usually employ, but it may also help increase blood flow to specific parts of the brain involved with ADHD," says Lubar. "Used with behavior therapies that incorporate classroom and
homework skills, neurofeedback can help these children become less dependent on stimulants like Ritalin."

More than 700 groups nationwide are using EEG biofeedback for ADD/ADHD, according to the Association for Applied Psychotherapy and Biofeedback, an organization of biofeedback practitioners. The ADHD therapists have reported that patients experienced a 60 to 80 percent significant improvement in symptoms and much
less need for medicine.

Dr. J. Alan Cook, a psychiatrist in Mt. Vernon, Washington, uses it for 25 to 35 percent of his patients, treating such problems as depression, addiction, bipolar disorder and ADHD. "Once the training has been completed, patients seem to retain
the benefits long term," he says.

Crossing a new frontier in neurotherapy, researchers from London, England, reported in the December 1999 International Journal of Psychophysiology that a group of schizophrenic people had used neurofeedback to create some of the same electrical patterns that schizophrenia drugs produce in the brain. Though the investigators couldn't tell from this short experiment how the neurofeedback might affect the patients' symptoms, they considered it a successful first step toward developing a new treatment.

As scientists understand better how the brain works -- or fails to work -- they are finding more and more ways it can heal itself.
